Bob Northern, often known in musical circles as Brother Ah, was born on May 28, 1934, in Kinston, North Carolina. His journey in music, particularly as a French horn player, has left an indelible mark on the realms of classical, jazz, and world music.

Bob’s initiation into the world of music began early. With a natural proclivity for the French horn, he soon found himself studying at the Manhattan School of Music and the Vienna State Academy of Music in Austria. His prowess on the instrument earned him prestigious positions in renowned orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.

However, Northern’s musical inclinations were not confined to classical repertoires. The 1960s saw him delve deep into the jazz world. Collaborating with luminaries such as Thelonious Monk, Gil Evans, and John Coltrane, Northern added a unique brass touch to many legendary jazz recordings.

By the 1970s, adopting the moniker Brother Ah, Northern began exploring the vast terrains of world music. His deep-seated interest in African, Indian, and Asian musical traditions led to innovative albums such as “Sound Awareness” and “Move Ever Onward.” These projects transcended conventional genres, blending organic sounds with spiritual undertones.

Not just a performer, Northern was also an influential educator. His dedication to imparting musical knowledge saw him teaching at various institutions, including Dartmouth College and the New School for Social Research. Through his teachings, he inspired countless students, emphasizing the interconnectedness of world music traditions.

Bob Northern’s contributions to music extended beyond performance and education. As a radio producer for the Smithsonian Institution, he curated programs that showcased the richness and diversity of global musical traditions.

Sadly, the world lost this musical maestro on May 31, 2020. Yet, Bob Northern’s legacy continues to resonate. His work as a French horn player, an experimenter across genres, and an educator cements his place as a trailblazer in the vast tapestry of musical history.
